handicap horseback riding program

The Variety Handicap Horseback Riding Program is a therapeutic as well as recreational program for mentally and/or physically challenged people.    Under the guidance and leadership of trained instructors, horseback riding provides an excellent form of physical and emotional therapy.  The goal of the program is an improved self-image for each rider.  This is accomplished through reinforcing existing abilities and challenging riders to strive for greater achievements within the scope of each individual.  Even the most reluctant rider soon discovers that the program is fun.  Each session consists of riding instructions, exercise and games on horseback.  Parents of riders are enthusiastic in describing the physical progress and improved self-confidence in their children in riding therapy.

Each riding instructor is certified and has been trained at the nationally recognized Cheff Center in Augusta, Michigan.  It is accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.  English riding is taught.

Riders from age five on up will benefit from the program, whether their handicap is physical, mental, or emotional.  The program improves their mind, body, and spirit.  Learning to ride is a real confidence builder, which becomes evident when the rider learns to manage the horses – they are just so proud of themselves.

Fees for the program are nominal and scholarships are available.  Donations are always welcome and are tax deductible. Financial support for the program comes from individual contributions and community organizations.

Program Location:  Bloomfield Open Hunt, Bloomfield Hills, MI (Long Lake Road at Kensington Road, ½ mile east of Woodward)
